DAVID BARNES: FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION AT RED RAG MODERN ART GALLERY The ancient, bold and rugged landscapes of Wales, Anglesey and the North Wales coast will take centre-stage in a new one-man show, celebrating the work of artist David Barnes, at the Red Rag Modern Art Gallery in Brock Street, Bath, from 17 April 2011. David has spent much of his free time over the years walking in the mountains of Snowdonia and on the coastline of North Wales and Anglesey; and it is his response to this landscape that inspires much of his work. Barnes has a growing reputation for his highly textured, evocative paintings of this cherished landscape; and for his enthusiastic, confident still life compositions. David works with oils and a palette knife, with a thick impasto technique, and produces bold strokes that suit the often rugged nature of the landscape which is his principal subject. This method of painting adds strength and texture to his painting, giving it a sculptured feel and evoking the very character and personality of the landscape. He generally uses a palette that reflects the often dark brooding colours of the North Wales landscape. However, he is increasingly using more vibrant colours and painting other landscapes that he loves ' Scotland, Cornwall, West Wales and Ireland ' and which will feature in the modern art show. David Barnes admires and is influenced by the work of the Welsh artist Sir Kyffin Williams, who used a similar impasto technique; but it is his response to the landscape of North Wales and Anglesey that has most inspired his work. David has exhibited widely in the UK but this is his first solo exhibition with the Red Rag Modern Art Gallery. The Red Rag Modern Art in Bath is open seven days a week from 10:00 daily. The David Barnes Modern Art Solo Exhibition will run from 17 April 2011 to 01 May 2011 at the Red Rag Modern Art Gallery Notes for Editors: Red Rag Gallery specialise in modern original paintings, sculptures and limited edition prints from leading British and Irish contemporary artists. 'Snowdon to London' ' a journey in contemporary Landscape painting Three contemporary landscape artists travel through middle England and North Wales on a visual journey from Snowdon to London, in an exhibition showing at the Red Rag Modern Art Gallery in Brock Street, Bath from Sunday, 14 November 2010 until 28 November 2010. The three ' David Barnes, Colin Carruthers and Michael Kidd ' share their interpretation of these precious, sometimes remote or unseen, landscapes in very distinctive styles, finding harmony in their love of the vibrant colour and gentle grandeur of the English and Welsh countryside. The three artists provide contrasting insights on this cross-country journey ' David Barnes offers highly textural, sculptured images of North Wales; Colin Carruthers gentler, atmospheric paintings of the quintessential Cotswolds and central England; and Michael Kidd strong, bold and imaginative paintings of the Cotswold landscape and the city, London. The journey involves an invitation from each artist to consider these fascinating country and urban landscapes afresh, whether that is by removing obvious references to 'offer up space for thought' (Carruthers); or by playing with mathematics, patterns, colour, perspective and reality to create a simplified striking image (Kidd); or by the use of bold strokes, strong textures and colour to capture the sculptured feel of place (Barnes). There is then a challenge in the journey ' even beyond enduring aesthetic pleasure the exhibition provides opportunity for thought and contemplation. The gallery is open seven days a week from 10:00 daily. Notes for Editors: Red Rag Gallery specialise in original paintings, sculptures and limited edition prints from leading British and Irish contemporary artists. 'Bath Scenes' ' contemporary, fresh views of familiar places in the City We move through it daily, travel its streets and spaces or rest in its familiarity; sometimes caught in our own thoughts ' looking without seeing; sometimes surprised or excited by what we see; the City. In a new exhibition running from 25 July 2010 at the Red Rag Modern Art Gallery in Brock Street, a select group of distinguished artists ' David Farren, Ian Hargreaves and Bath-based artist Bruce Yardley ' convey their own unique impressions and interpretations of familiar and less well known places in the famous Georgian City of Bath ' its architecture, atmosphere and people. In so doing they open our eyes to look again at familiar places in a new light. All three artists work in the impressionist tradition. David Farren has built a reputation as a modern impressionist, painting in oils and acrylic, using open brushwork and colour to represent the energy and movement of the urban landscape and to capture the ambience and everyday life of the City. Ian Hargreaves paints mainly in acrylic; and imbues the everyday with fresh insight and meaning. Bruce Yardley , painting confidently and exclusively in oils, is fascinated with the varied effects of light and shade; and has the ability effortlessly to evoke a sense of place and experience. Carine Besse, Gallery Manager, said, 'It is a delight and joy to celebrate the special atmosphere and culture of our wonderful City in this exhibition, through the work of these three gifted artists.' David Farren (b.1972) was born in the region and studied art at Bristol. He has been painting professionally since 2000. Ian Hargreaves (b. 1957) studied at Bournemouth College of Art (1974-6) and is a member of the International Guild of Realism. He has spent many years working in the UK and Europe (especially Germany) and has exhibited in the UK, Germany and the USA. Bruce Yardley (b. 1962), based locally in Bath, is the son of artist John Yardley and has been painting full-time since 1996, after a career in the wine trade. He is an associate member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and received the Menena Joy Schwabe Memorial Award in 2000. All three contributors have exhibited widely and their work is held in collections in the UK and abroad. The gallery is open seven days a week from 10:00 daily. Still Life brings together modern art work by both established and emerging young artists in a vivid and colourful mid-summer show. The art exhibition includes still life painting in all its dynamic diversity. Still life painting captures objects in a moment in time, yet imbues that moment ' and often the mystery of the story behind it ' with an enduring quality. The exhibition at the Red Rag Modern Art Gallery includes the art works from artists who exercise this skill with ease. Anji Allen , for instance, captures a sense of story telling in her celebration of the everyday ' a bowl of cherries, a pile of books ' recognizing that her textured paintings are 'an emotional response to memory'; Sophie Harding achieves a similar sense of life captured in a moment in her unusual, endearing naïve style; while Peter Burgess uses a graphic style, thoughtful composition and a fine balance of light and shade to create striking images of timeless elegance; and Andrew Talbot narrates his stories in exquisite, fine detail and deep, rich colour. Michael Clark , Jane Lion and Paul Stone are among other artists exhibiting in this show. Art works are presented in both oils and acrylic. Red Rag Gallery Manager, Carine Besse, notes 'It is a wonderful uplifting experience to see everyday objects ' still life ' viewed in new and inspiring ways with skill and feeling, enabling us to view our world in a fresh light. Still Life will refresh and inspire.' All artists participating in 'Still Life' have exhibited widely in the UK and their art work is held in many art collections in the UK, Europe and elsewhere. The British landscape is renowned for its many-faceted character ' from the wilds of Scotland to the mellow warmth of the Cotswolds ' and has been explored in art over generations. In this exhibition, Red Rag have assembled work by a wealth of talented, living artists who are re-interpreting this fascinating and continually changing landscape in contemporary and distinctive ways for a new generation. The art exhibition ranges from local Cotswold scenes ' the crisp, finely detailed imaginative interpretations of Michael Kidd ('playing with perspectives and keeping it simple') and the railway poster-like images of Alan Tyers ' to the enchanting pastel scenes of land and sky of Norman Smith and the charming, intimate wildflower studies of Ann Oram, both of which exude the atmosphere of summer. Hugh Sean O'Rourke's bold paintings of the wide expanses of the Irish Atlantic coast, and David Atkins , with his evocative images of Dorset's Jurassic coast, capture differing moods of the land/sea edge; while Laurence Quigley and Colin Carruthers complete the show with characteristic studies of light and shade as they seek to capture and share their own experience of painting outside in the landscape, particularly in southern England. Red Rag Gallery Manager, Carine Besse, commenting on the forthcoming exhibition, said, 'The quality and variety of work shown in this exhibition is truly astounding and offers a new window for us to see afresh the richness of our treasured landscapes'.
